Cassill Swept Up in Lap One Crash; ThorSport Racing Debut Ends on Sidelines
Landon Cassill was ready to race to the front in his debut driving ThorSport Racing’s No. 98 etc. EasytoInstall.com/SouthernCandle.com Chevrolet in the NASCAR Camping World Series NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona International Speedway, but a lap one error in judgment by another driver resulted in a massive pileup entering turn three and left Cassill’s truck with severe damage to the front end. Without completing a lap, Cassill was forced to the garage area and was left with a disappointing 36th-place finish.
“I just saw them wrecking and the No. 3 truck was against the fence and the No. 13 was right in my lane and I couldn’t judge how fast they were moving,” Cassill said. “I tried to move up just a little bit to compensate for both but it’s too tough to do that. I think back that if I got a second chance at it I could’ve missed it. “The EasytoInstall.com Chevy was pretty good in practice and I really felt like we made good adjustments for the race and I was excited to get out there. I just really appreciate ThorSport Racing for giving me the opportunity and Hendrick Motorsports for sticking their neck out and giving us a motor to use. Hopefully we get a chance to use it again and put together a truck for some more races.”
Cassill also expressed disappointment for his sponsors, etc. brand cabinetry and it’s EasytoInstall.com website along with SouthernCandle.com. Both companies shared space on Cassill’s truck, along with teammate Johnny Sauter’s No. 13, both of which were eliminated in the opening lap crash.
“It’s disappointing for them because it’s been such a fun week and everyone has been so excited in getting here,” Cassill said. “We were hoping to get them a lot of exposure on TV tonight, and we probably did but not in the way we were hoping. We’d have loved it for all three ThorSport trucks to be lined up heading for that checkered flag, but instead two of us were in the garage before a single lap was completed. It’s a shame, but that’s racing. I can’t thank everyone enough for coming on board and making it happen. I hope they were excited and enjoyed themselves, even though we were out early.”
The next race for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is the Atlanta 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 6. The 135-lap/200-mile race will be televised live on SPEED starting with a 30-minute pre-race show at 1:30 P.M. Eastern. The race will also be broadcast live on select affiliates of the Motor Racing Network nationwide and on Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 128 (XM 104).

 ThorSport Racing will expand to a three-truck team for the 2010 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season-opener at Daytona with the addition of Landon Cassill to drive the team’s No. 98 etc. EasytoInstall.com/Southern Candle Chevrolet.
Cassill made his NASCAR debut in 2007 – at just 17 years of age – driving in a limited schedule of just six races for Hendrick Motorsports in the Nationwide Series. In 2008 he made 19 Nationwide Series starts, he earned five top-ten finishes in the Nationwide Series with a best finish of sixth (twice, at Gateway and Phoenix) and scored one pole position (Loudon). In the Camping World Truck Series, he made six starts for the Morgan-Dollar/Randy Moss team, with one top-five finish and three top-ten finishes, with his best being third at Milwaukee.
You must be excited to get the call to come racing with ThorSport Racing at Daytona; how did this come about so late in the off-season? “A few months ago I was introduced to David Pepper at ThorSport and we just started working on ways to get a third truck team off the ground. Duke Thorson has a tremendous program in the Camping World Truck Series and I look forward to try and add to the effort. I have to hand it to them. The team has worked really hard the past couple of weeks and I am really looking forward to seeing the effort pay off.”
The last time you ran a Truck Series race at a “restrictor plate” track you finished sixth at Talladega in 2008; what’s your strategy to come out of Daytona with a solid finish and get your season off on the right foot? “Any restrictor plate track is a gamble, but there’s still some strategy to it. Staying out of trouble and not putting the truck in compromising positions on the racetrack is key to being around for the end, when it really counts. I have some great teammates in Johnny Sauter and Matt Crafton, who have a lot of experience between them. Hopefully I can do my part in making sure that all three of us are up front at the end, giving us a great opportunity for a win.”
What can you do as a driver to put your fate in your own hands at Daytona? “Making good decisions in the draft and being patient is the most important thing I can do at Daytona. Having friends and keeping friends in the draft is key to when you need a push to the checkered flag. I work on supporting teammates and finding good trucks to draft with through the race so I have an idea on what works well at the end. A lot of it comes down to luck, but I will be doing my best to keep us around the front with some help.”
Landon Cassill at Daytona: The NextEra Energy Resources 250 will be Cassill’s first career NASCAR start at Daytona International Speedway. He has one previous ARCA Racing Series start at Daytona; he started eighth and finished seventh, completing all 80 laps, driving for JR Motorsports in 2008.
